Lydia Miller Ray (1752-1845) was a resident of Orange County, North Carolina during the American Revolution. She took care of her oldest son James when he fell sick in the fall of 1780. Around the same time James died from his illness, Lydia's husband Joseph came home and also fell ill. Lydia tried to nurse her husband back to health, all the while pregnant with the couple's fifth child. Her husband died in December 1780 and she later had to care for her family as a single mother and protect them from the British troops that camped at their home.
