Biographical Description

Josiah Martin (1737-1786) was the last royal governor of North Carolina, serving officially from 1771 to 1781, though his official authority had dissipated as early as 1774. After the war he wrote letters in support of many prominent North Carolinian loyalists who were pursuing compensation from the American Loyalist Claims Commission including William Brimage, a member of the Gourd Patch Conspiracy.
