Biographical Description

John Hoyter was a Chowan Indian who was born in about 1645. By 1704, English colonists considered John Hoyter the chief or king of the Chowanoke Nation. In this role, Hoyter appealed to the colonial government on behalf of his people and also helped broker land sales from the reservation to various colonists. He died by August 1733.
