Biographical Description

Peter Johnson was likely a free person of color residing in Carteret County. In the summer of 1724 he traveled with his wife Anne down to South Carolina, where he stayed for a short time while Anne traveled back to North Carolina with Jacob Johnson, likely Peter's brother, cousin, or other relative. Peter and Anne reunited at some later point and when Anne was charged with burglary due to her actions at Peter Perdeau's home, Peter came with her to the North Carolina General Court, where her charges were dismissed. In March 1728 Anne came before the court again, this time being accused of adultery for cohabiting with Jacob. It is unclear Peter Johnson was still alive at this time.
