Stockade April 4th 1877
To His Excellency Gov. Z. B. Vance
I beg to call your attention to the fact that we have a number of convicts here who are & have never done any good at all. The most of them were deseased when they came here It is impossible for these hands ever to be cured in camp. The company is paying just as much for them as for good hands
I will be greatly oblige to your Excellency if you will confer a great favor upon the company if you can help us in this matter. We are the only parties in the State that pay one cent for convicts and this is now due us. about fifty We beg that you make such recommendations as will effect the foregoing object.
Coln. R. Y. McAden was up here with several prominent R. R. men and they expected that when you got in as Gov that they would get their full quota at once. The talk is that Brogden & Coffin gave them convicts but they have not been able to get any [since] Gov Vance has been in office not withstanding they have to pay for them. I am much pleased with evey thing up here. The convicts are well feed and are treated humanely.
Yours truly,
