Biographical Description

John Hawkins was a member of the Yeopim Indian nation. English colonists considered him one of the Yeopim's leading figures. Hawkins may have taken his English name from North Carolina colonist John Hawkins, a member of the colonial council who died in 1717. In 1725 he brought a suit before the North Carolina General Court against Thomas James, a colonist who owed him money.
