Biographical Description

George Seneca was an American Indian man who was residing with the Meherrin tribe in Bertie Precinct, North Carolina. Seneca is never identified as a Meherrin in records and his last name indicates that he was likely originally part of the Seneca Nation. On July 25, 1726 he murdered Catherine Groom and her two children with an axe. Seneca's motive for the attack was not recorded. In the aftermath of the crime, the North Carolina government demanded that the Meherrin turn over Seneca and they complied so that he could face a trial. The North Carolina General Court found Seneca guilty and sentenced Seneca to death by hanging on August 26, 1726.
