Biographical Description

Willowby was presumably a Chowanoke Indian man. Sometime prior to April 1720 Willowby sold an enslaved American Indian captive to James Sitterson. When Sitterson did not pay Willowby, the Chowan chief John Hoyter came before the North Carolina Council demanding payment on Willowby's behalf. Willowby's captive was likely a member of the Coree, a nation which had sided against the colonists during the Tuscarora War. Any further information about Willowby has not been located.
