Biographical Description
Laura Placidia Clark was born in 1816 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Coming from a politically-involved family, she married the wealthy John Whitaker Cotten, in 1832 and the couple had four children. After her husband's death, the family moved to Raleigh, where her eldest daughter, Margaret Eliza Cotten, kept a diary. She died in 1864 in Tarboro, Edgecombe County.
