James Murray (1713-1781) was a prominent merchant, planter, and politician who served as a member of the North Carolina Council from 1739 to 1757 and from 1762 to 1765. Royal governor Arthur Dobbs accused Murray and John Rutherfurd of financial crimes and removed both from the Council in 1757. Murray was reinstated in 1762 but determined to leave North Carolina in 1765.
