Richard Sanderson was raised in Currituck Precinct, North Carolina, the son of a member of the North Carolina Council. After a career in the maritime industry, Sanderson became a justice of the North Carolina General Court in 1712 and later held a seat on the North Carolina Council from 1717 to 1730. He died in Perquimans Precinct, North Carolina in about August 1733.
