Biographical Description

William Wilkins was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on December 20, 1779. A lawyer and judge, he served in the U.S. House and Senate representing Pennsylvania before becoming the U.S. Secretary of War from 1844-1845 under President John Tyler. He died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 23, 1865.
