John Sanford Martin was born May 30, 1886, in Hamptonville, North Carolina. He preferred to be known, and signed his correspondence as, Santford Martin. In addition to being editor of the Winston-Salem Journal, Martin accepted a position as executive secretary to Gov. Thomas W. Bickett, which office he held until 1920. He died in Winston-Salem on April 14, 1957.
