Western North Carolina Rail Road.
President's Office,

Govr Vance
Dear Govr,

You may see it stated that part of the mail has been taken from our route and transferred to Spartanburg.
Two mail trains pass Salisbury one at 11 at night and the other at 9 a. m. we connect closely with the latter reaching Henry at 5 p.m. The stage leaves then the next morning with the mail, we of course can not force it off any sooner. We loose no pay by it but did not wish the change. The Asheville people wishing to injure us petitioned for it and I regretted to learn that Gnrl Vance wrote a letter to the department arguing it. No news here of any interest. A large slide has come in at the long branch, it is certainly discouraging. I wished to put a night force on it and offered if necessary to put additional guard but was not allowed to do so. I shd. have the authority to order hands where I desire.

Very Rspy & Truly,
