That about 12 months after they were married her husband left home which was in the Summer time and joined the army she can recollect the time from the fact that it was in the midst of the crop Season of the year and she was thereby compelled Turn out and work herself to complete, and finish the cultivation of the growing crop. That he was absent from that time until the end of the War. And was in the army in the Service of his Country—as She was informed by him and as She has every reason to beleive not only from his own declarations but from the declarations of those persons—who Served with him and who had every reason to know he served to the end of the war. That She has no record of her marriage nor the ages of her children and She beleives there was no record of either made of her late husband John Davis died in the County of Johnston State of North Carolina on the 9th day of November 1831 in 76th year of his age, and that She has bin and remained a widow ever since as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereunto appended

I hereby certify I am personally acquainted with Mrs. Mourning Davis as above widow of John Davis that She is one of the oldest persons living in this part of the country of Sound mind but from bodily infirmity she is unable to attend at the court house of the county living at some distance from it that She is a verry respectable lady and whatsoever Statement she makes may be relied on as true I further certify I was well acquainted with her husband John Davis decd. who died about the time state by Mrs. Mourning Davis that he was always esteemed and respected a Soldier of the revolutionary war—and indeed I never herd it questioned by any person who was acquainted with him
