Hon. Locke Craig Governor,
Raleigh, N.C.
My Dear Governor:-
I beg to advise that as per your request when in Asheville, Mr. E. T. Blackstocks, Chairman of the Mitchell Peak Park Commission, called a meeting of said Commission at Burnsville yesterday, the 17th inst., and that I as attorney for said Commission was present.
Mr. Watson, Mr. Hunnicutt and Mr. Blackstocks were the only members of the Commission at the meeting.
The Commission decided, when it was fully explained to them the nature of the request of Mr. Gearhart, that they would furnish a surveyor to go upon the premises with Mr. Gearhart at once and point out all of the lines of the various land owners to the end that he might be able to cruise and accurately estimate all of the merchantable timber and pulp wood belonging to each individual land owner. It was further decided that the appraisers who have already been selected should go upon the land just as soon as convenient and make their report as the amount of lumber and pulp wood and as to the value of the land contended for by Mrs. Connelly and Mrs. Burnett; at the same time returning a verdict valuing the remainder of the land at $5.00 per acre in accordance with contracts which we have previously made with all the land owners.
It was further decided that in accordance with said contracts as to the sale of the land, that Mr. Richmond Young would furnish me with descriptions in the next few days and that I should prepare deeds from these land owners to the State of North Carolina and have the same executed if possible before the appraisers go upon the premises. I take it from the language of the Act that the grantee in the deed should be the State. I would thank you to look at the Act and advise me whether or not my construction of it is correct.
I think that the meeting at Burnsville was effective in that it has at least made Mr. Watson and Mr. Hunnicutt understand the importance of their co-operation as to the survey and the necessary maps, and further that it is important that the matter be pushed along as fast as possible.
I will thank you to call my attention to anything that you desire done in the premises from time to time and I assure you that I will do all that I can to get the title to this property in the State at an early date.
With regards and best wishes,
Yours very truly,
AHJ/IRG
