William Harrison came before us Justices appointed to keep the Peace for the County aforesaid having made Oath on the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God deposeth & Saith, that Daniel ^Legate^ came to him at his own Plantation & walk’d with him on the Path towards Thomas Garrett, & there the said Leggett told this Deponent that if he could keep a secret he could tell him something. This Deponent told him he could, Then said Leggett Administred the first Oath to this Deponent, which was to keep Secret what should be disclosed to him, this happen’d about a fortnight before the ASecond & Third Oath was Administred to him That said Leggett desir’d this Deponent to take another Oath & that then he should be inform’d of something more, which this Deponent declin’d at that Time that this Deponent having Observ’d something more than Ordinary amongst his Neighbours was afraid from what Leggett had told himself that he the said Legget was leading them into Trouble, that on Saturday the Fifth Inst being at muster he there herard of some People up the Country being committed to Joal [Jail], which Increas’d his Fears for his Neigbours and Confirm’d his suspicions of Leggett—which motives Induc’d this Deponent to endeavour to get at the Bottom of this affair, in order to Rescue his Neighbours from the Danger they appeared to this Deponent to be in, by breaking up the plot & that as he was going home from the muster In consequence of this Resolution, he took a second oath enjoining secrecy administered by John Everett the son of Nathaniel who told him to go to Leggett for the Rest, upon which said Everett & this Deponent went to Leggett & met with him bewixt Thomas Harris’s and his Sons, where said Leggett Administered the Third Oath to this Deponent which Oath was to be True to this Society to stand by its Constitution & not divulge or disclose it without his Consent or the Consent of some Others of the Society—That next day being Sunday in the morning this Deponent went to look for Said Leggett to endeavour & move to get this association Broke up pursuant to his former Resolution, & found him in Company with some more of the Associators who found & Moved to them to break it up they all seem’d to be much pleased with the motion except Leggett who refus’d to break it up. The Persons there Present to the best of this Deponent’s recollection were his Brothers Thomas and James Harrison & Benjamin the son of said Thomas and James the son of said James Harrison that the day thereafter this being Monday this Deponent sent for Leggett & some others of the Association who being come close to this Deponents Plantation they Insisted upon said Leggetts breaking up the Association which at last he was prevailed upon do, & to destroy the Constitution & the Third Oath by Tearing them to pieces since which Time this Deponent hath never seen or conversd with said Leggett, and further this Deponent sayeth not
