William Bryham Roper was born on June 7, 1870, in Norfolk, Virginia. Roper was the son of John Lonsdale Roper, prominent businessman and proprietor of the John L. Roper Lumber Company. He worked for his father's lumber company for a while and then served as Secretary-Treasurer of the North Carolina Pine Association. Roper died on January 14, 1964.
