David Lowry Swain was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on January 4, 1801. A member of the Whig party, he served as the Governor of North Carolina from 1832 to 1835. He later became the president of the University of North Carolina, a position he held for the remainder of his life. He died in Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina on August 27, 1868.
