Biographical Description

Sarah Payson Willis was born in 1811 in Portland, Maine. To support herself and her children after a messy marriage, she started writing for several newspapers and quickly became quite famous under the pen name Fanny Fern, later turning to writing novels. By the time of her death in Massachusetts in 1872, she was the most popular newspaper columnist in the country, especially among middle-class women.
