Edmund Thomas White was born in Granville County on May 25, 1858. White originally practiced medicine but by the 1890s worked full time in the banking and tobacco industries in Oxford. He cofounded Granville National Bank in 1894 and served as its president for the next several decades. He also served on the board of Trustees for Duke University. He died in Oxford on July 31, 1928.
