Biographical Description

Mark Anthony was an African American man enslaved by William Brimage. Brimage purchased Anthony in 1767 when Anthony was ten years old. Anthony then served the Brimage family for the next fifteen years as a personal valet for Brimage. In addition to traveling with Brimage on Brimage's judicial circuit, Anthony was also a cook and cared for Brimage's horses. When Brimage was exiled from the state in 1777 he brought Anthony with him, and in 1782, Brimage brought Anthony with him to England. Though Brimage seemed to expect Anthony would remain with him, Anthony, now legally free, left, aged 25.
