William Warwick Lawrence was born into slavery in Craven County, North Carolina, on December 14, 1858. Lawrence was a music store proprietor and repairman in New Bern who served as a notary public beginning during the administration of Gov. Alfred Moore Scales up through the administration of Gov. Thomas W. Bickett. He died in New Bern on January 5, 1930.
