Mary Frances "May" Jones was born in Raleigh (Wake County), North Carolina on June 16, 1877. Jones served as stenographer and private secretary to Governor Locke Craig (June 27, 1916-January 1917). She was an advocate of women's suffrage and was an active supporter of the Democratic Party. During World War I, she served as a civilian volunteer both in the United States and over in France. Jones died in Morganton (Burke County) on March 21, 1948.
