John Burton Clingman was born in Farmington, North Carolina, on March 31, 1888. Beginning about 1913, Clingman served as a civil and highway engineer for the State of North Carolina for several decades. He moved from Winston-Salem to Florida in 1950, where he resided until his death there on March 13, 1973.
