Biographical Description

William Pugh (d. 1809) was a resident of Bertie County who served as a justice for the Bertie County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions. In 1777 he was ordered to administer the oath of allegiance to residents in his own district in order to make sure that North Carolina's independence was not threatened. Later in 1781 he continued to support the cause of independence and received compensation from the state government for supplying the Continental Army with foodstuffs.
