Thomas Vail (d. 1802) was a resident of Chowan County. As the clerk of the court for the Edenton District Court of Oyer and Terminer, he oversaw some of the proceedings against the members of the Gourd Patch Conspiracy as they were brought to trial. In 1778 he signed an oath swearing his allegiance to the State of North Carolina and promised to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence.
