Biographical Description

John Oxley (d. 1805) was a resident of Bertie County who served as the county's deputy sheriff in 1778. That year, the Edenton District Court of Oyer and Terminer requested that Oxley and David Standley, the county sheriff, apprehend and deliver several members of the Gourd Patch Conspiracy to the Edenton courthouse to face charges of misprision of treason.
