Biographical Description

Daniel Sutherland (d. 1792) was a merchant in Tarborough who provided Bartlet Moreland Davidson with gunpowder. Davidson later brought that gunpowder to the Gourd Patch, where he distributed it amongst the conspiracy's members in advance of their plans to kill several leading local officials and seize the powder magazine in Halifax. It is unclear whether he provided the powder because he sympathized with the conspirators, or if he was unaware of the plot. He later made anti-Catholic statements in his will, indicating that even if he was not directly involved in the plot, he was likely sympathetic to their movement.
