Biographical Description

William Hyman (d. 1792) was a resident of Bertie County. In 1777 James Sherrard approached him and asked him to swear an oath of secrecy and promise to oppose the state's military draft in order to become a member of the Gourd Patch Conspiracy. Hyman later claimed that he found portions of the oaths objectionable and did not involve himself in the plot any further.
