Biographical Description

John Staten was a resident of Bertie County. In 1777 he became a member of the Gourd Patch Conspiracy and helped recruit John Clifton, an acquaintance of his who was travelling through the area on his way home to Anson County, to join the plot. According to Isaac Barbee, Staten's membership in the plot or possibly his general loyalism was at some point discovered and state officials seized and arrested him.
