Whitmell Hill (12 February 1743-12 September 1797) was a planter, politician and soldier who resided in Martin County. He served as a Lt. Colonel in the Martin County Regiment of the North Carolina Militia from 1775-1778 under the command of his wife's half brother Col. William Williams. He was a local justice of the peace alongside John Lewellen, served on the local Committee of Safety, and represented Martin at several sittings of the provincial congress. He later represented Martin in 1777 at the first North Carolina General Assembly before serving as the speaker of the state senate in 1778 and becoming a delegate to the Continental Congress. Hill was one of the intended victims of the Gourd Patch Conspiracy, as Lewellen and others believed that Hill intended to lessen the power of Protestantism in the state. Hill then was among the first to uncover the conspiracy as news of the plot made its way to Governor Caswell.
