Hampton Thomas Medford was born on January 29, 1881 in Marion, North Carolina. As a minister in the A.M.E. Zion church, Medford held several pastorates and two important positions within the church: Secretary of Foreign Missions (1928-1948) and bishop (elected 1948). He died in Washington, D.C., on September 26, 1964.
