Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle, was born in Sussex in July 1693. Pelham-Holles, a lifelong Whig, served as First Lord of the Treasury, (prime minister, by convention) from March 1754 to November 1756 and again from June 1757 until his resignation in 1762. He died in London on November 17, 1768.
