James Craven was born in England and arrived in North Carolina by 1734. A clerk of the court for Chowan County, Craven also worked as a merchant and as a member of the North Carolina Colonial Assembly from 1740 to 1746. He later served as the secretary of North Carolina from 1751 to 1753 and as a member of the North Carolina Council from 1753 until his death in 1755.
