George Herbert Smith was born on May 14, 1857, in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Smith was a prominent businessman connected with a variety of establishments in Wilmington, North Carolina, including the Smith and Gilchrist firm, the Acme Manufacturing Company, and the Cape Fear Packing Company. He died in Wilmington on May 14, 1921.
