Charles Evans Hughes was born on April 11, 1862, in Glens Falls, New York. Hughes served as governor of the state of New York (1907-1910), associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1910-1916), United States Secretary of State (1921-1925), and chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1930-1941). He died in Osterville, Massachusetts, on August 27, 1948.
