Biographical Description

John King was an American Indian man of unknown tribal origin. In 1695 when he brought a complaint to the North Carolina General Court, he won the right for all American Indians to hunt on unoccupied lands and to freely travel through colonists' properties to reach those lands. Based on King's presence before the court and willingness to advocate on behalf of all Indians, King likely held some sort of leadership role within his tribe.
