Biographical Description

Arden A. Nelson Jr. was born around 1855 in Washington County, North Carolina. In his youth, he was enslaved by William Grimes. He was convicted of murder in 1877 in Washington County and wrote to Governor Zebulon B. Vance asking for a pardon. He was sentenced to death and hanged on January 21, 1878.
