Biographical Description

Jesse Rankin Wharton was born in Guilford County, North Carolina on September 2, 1833. Wharton attended the University of North Carolina (class of 1855), served the Confederacy during the Civil War, and later served as superintendent of education for Guilford County for twenty-five years (retired 1903). He died in Guilford County on March 5, 1904.
