Robert Lafayette Huffman was born on October 18, 1884, in Catawba County, North Carolina. Huffman was a lawyer by training. He served as solicitor for the Sixteenth Judicial District from 1917 to 1926. As a younger man, Huffman seems to have gone by the name of Reuben. He died in Hickory, North Carolina on August 9, 1940.
