Joseph Carter Abbott was born in Concord, New Hampshire on July 15, 1825. A lawyer and newspaper editor, after the Civil War he moved to Wilmington, where he became a senator and ally of Governor William Woods Holden during his term. He died in Wilmington, North Carolina on October 8, 1881.
