Zebulon Vance Crawford was born in Old Fort (McDowell County) on December 16, 1861. Crawford moved to Black Mountain (Buncombe County) in 1900, where he worked in sales at the local department store and later owned a house painting business. He died at his Black Mountain home on January 16, 1948.
