Levy James Melton was born on December 25, 1864, in Mechanicsville, South Carolina. A graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, Melton was a Presbyterian minister who served the communities, at one time or another, of Wilson, McClintock, Mt. Olive, Cedar Grove, and Matthews. He was a longtime resident of Charlotte, at which place he died on May 23, 1941.
