James Hallaway Kirkman was born in Smithfield (Johnston County), North Carolina, on November 19, 1874. Kirkman was president of the Smithfield Hardware Company, engaged in the real estate and insurance businesses, and served as coroner and magistrate for Johnston County for over twenty-five years. He died in Smithfield on June 24, 1934.
