Biographical Description

Thomas Clark (d. 22 August 1777) was a resident of Pitt County. In August 1777 he visited his neighbor Nathan Mayo and, both inebriated, proceeded to have a heated discussion about politics. Clark professed support for King George III, and when Mayo did not agree, Clark tried to shoot him. Mayo, fearing for his life, got his gun loaded with buckshot from inside his house and returned outside, shooting and killing Clark. Mayo was later acquitted for the crime.
