Biographical Description

James Buchanan Duke was born in Orange County (present-day Durham County), North Carolina, on December 23, 1856. Duke was an influential businessman and philanthropist who invested heavily in the textile, energy, and tobacco industries. He died in New York City on October 10, 1925.
