John William Rutherford was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina, on July 26, 1867. Rutherford was a prominent dairy farmer and lumberman who served as a member of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners from 1910 to 1916. He died in Asheville on August 19, 1948.
