Biographical Description

Hugh Williamson (5 December 1735-22 May 1819) was a doctor and politician who was resident of Chowan County. In 1778 he signed an oath swearing his allegiance to the State of North Carolina and promising to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence. He served as Surgeon General of North Carolina during the American Revolution. Later he was one of North Carolina's three signers of the U.S. Constitution.
