Biographical Description

Luke Sumner (d. 1780) served as the chairman of the Chowan County Committee of Safety and as a justice of the peace. In 1778 he collected oaths from Chowan county residents, asking them to swear their allegiance to the State of North Carolina and promise to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence.
